By the time Monday July 3rd rolls around, it will have been nearly a year since Wartburg Speedway has seen any racing action. That will all change when the Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series returns to the 1/3 mile oval in a $3000 to win Super Late Model event.
This will complete a three race 4th of July weekend for the series. Crossville's Raceway USA will host the $3000 to win Independence 50 on Friday June 30th and Atomic Speedway will host the $5000 to win Firecracker 60 on Saturday July 1st.
Preperations have already been made to restore the scoring tower, concession stands and the grounds of the historic facility to working conditions after vandals wreaked havoc over the winter. All of the glass including light fixtures were broken out of the press box and concession stands. Several pieces of equipment were overturned and two pack cars were completely destroyed.
The parking lot, pit area, tier parking and grand stand areas have been freshly mowed and cleaned up. Grade work on the track is set to begin Friday June 9th. Water, power and phone service is expected in the next couple of days.
Thunder Series officials hope to have the facility ready for practice on Tuesday night June 27th.
There will also be a special Sportsman Event that will include qualifying, heat racing and feature. A Demolition Derby and Fireworks will round out the evenings festivities on Monday night July 3rd.
The track is still up for sale and owner financing is now being offered. For details, contact Scott Greene at 865-435-7092. Other than this Thunder Series event and possibly one more later in the season, no lease option on the track is being offered.
