CLARKSVILLE, TN – According to StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series and Bullet Performance Engines officials, the Research and Development phase of the new Ford Crate Engine has been going well. Officials said another couple of weeks of R&D testing will be needed before the engine is available to competitors sometime in September.
Robert Gant of Flat Rock, AL has been driving a Mastersbilt chassis powered by the Bullet Performance Engines Ford crate engine in private testing sessions, and in StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series competition as a non-points provisional entrant. After four races, Gant has a win, and a fast time.
From the first test on the dyno to present, results for the Bullet Performance Engines Ford have been comparable to the GM Performance 604 Crate Engine.
The dyno sheets between the Ford and GM engines are almost equal. Gant, and driver Jeff Smith, who drove the Ford in a private test session, both say the Ford has better high-end torque, and the GM has better low-end torque, which is consistent with any Ford vs. GM comparison with any type of engine.
In competition, Gant debuted the Ford at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL on August 5 during a StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Touring event. Gant qualified 17th out of 51 entrants, won his B-main race, and finished 18th in the main event.
Gant then took the Ford to a StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series event at his home track, Thunder Mountain Speedway in Fyffe, AL, on August 12. Gant won the main event over StormPay.com DLMS National Touring top five drivers Jeff Smith, Jeff Fields, and Zach Nichols.
The next stop for Gant and the Ford was at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL on August 18 for a StormPay.com DLMS National Touring event. Gant was the fast qualifier with a time of 14.831 seconds. The second quick GM engine timed in at 14.877 seconds.
Gant started the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash in sixth, and finished sixth. Gant spun on lap 34 in the main event while running tenth, and he finished 19th.
The next night, Gant returned to his home track for the StormPay.com DLMS National event at Thunder Mountain Speedway. Gant qualified second quick with a time of 16.060 seconds. Fast time was 15.930 seconds, and third quick was 16.280 seconds for the GM Performance comparison.
The StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash had Gant starting sixth, and finishing fifth. Gant was running fifth in the main event when he spun on lap two. Gant went to the back of the pack for the restart, and came back through the field to finish fifth in the 40-lap main event.
Both StormPay.com DLMS and Bullet Performance Engines officials say the Ford Crate Engine has no apparent advantage, or disadvantage to the GM Performance Crate Engine. They also said another version of the Ford engine is being built at the Bullet Performance Engines facility in Philadelphia, PA for further testing and R&D.
