COLUMBUS, MS – Mike Boland of Cuba, AL, David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN, Chris Jimerson of Gilbertown, AL, and Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN won their respective ten-lap heat races Friday night for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
Those four drivers will be lining up for the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash on Saturday afternoon to determine their starting positions for the 40-lap $3,000-to-win main event on Saturday night.
The top four finishers in each heat race on Friday night transferred to the main event on Saturday night, and the fifth-place finishers on back will line up in one of two 12-lap B-Main races on Saturday night.
Boland was also the fast qualifier among the 45 entrants with a lap around the 3/8-mile dirt oval in 14.687 for an average speed of 91.918 in the Ware Construction GRT. Boland was able to take advantage of a smooth race track just after track officials had graded the surface.
Over seven inches of rain during the week left a soft track that was quick to get rough. The track conditions forced track officials to reschedule other events that were scheduled for Friday night, including the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash, to Saturday afternoon.
Following Boland in the first heat race and transferring to the big show were Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA in the Turner Excavating Hicks, James Ussery of Cottondale, FL in the Shores Construction GRT, and Curtis Cline of Douglasville, GA in the J.L. Brooks Construction Warrior.
Transferring to the main out of the second heat race behind Gentry’s Dixon Plumbing Mastersbilt were Mark Tice of Hollandale, MS in the TNT Graphix Mastersbilt, Jeff Smith of Villanow, GA in the All South Racing Products Warrior, and Landon Frith of Terry, MS in the Swinging Bridge Raceway Mastersbilt.
Taking second through fourth respectively behind Jimerson’s Butler Auto Parts Mastersbilt in the third heat race were Chad Thrash of Meridian, MS in the Speedway Collectibles GRT, Anthony Hill of Carrollton, GA in the Hill Racing Rocket, and 16-year-old Mitch Cobb of Edmonds, CO in the Ray Cook-prepared Majack Development Mastersbilt.
Transferring out of the fourth heat behind Johnson’s Rick Hixon-owned Austin Trucking Mastersbilt were Rusty Hoge of Ooltewah, TN in the H&H Powersports GRT, Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA in the WMF Racing Products Mastersbilt, and Roger Rollison of Meridian, MS in the Best Western of Meridian GRT.
Rows one and two for the main event will be determined by the finish of the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash on Saturday afternoon. Turner and Tice will make up the third row on the grid, with Thrash and Hoge in row four. Ussery and Smith will start the big show from the fifth row, while Hill and Fields will start from the sixth row.
Row seven has Cline on the inside, and Frith on the outside. Rounding out the “Sweet 16” in row eight will be Cobb on the inside, and Rollison on the outside. The top three finishers in each of the B-Mains will transfer to the main event in the 17th through 22nd starting spots. Starting positions 23 and 24 are StormPay.com DLMS Top 15 point provisionals.
Five drivers in the StormPay.com DLMS point standings are still on the outside looking in, and will either have to race their way in through a B-Main, or see if they are eligible for one of the two provisional starting spots.
Fifth-place Zach Nichols of Cedartown, GA, sixth-place Frankie Beard of Hartwell, GA, eighth-place Carnell Parker III of Clarksville, TN, 12th-place Michael Keener of Douglasville, GA, and 13th-place Ryan Gifford of Winchester, TN will line up for B-Main competition on Saturday night.
The most spectacular incident of the evening occurred in the first heat race when a multi-car tangle send Rodney Weaver of Danville, AL upside-down in turn three. Weaver climbed out of his Weaver’s Welding and Fabrication GRT uninjured.
Gentry will clinch the 2006 StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Championship by starting the main event on Saturday night, as the second-place driver in points, Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN, was a no-show at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Buckingham’s absence has also set up a three-way battle for the second spot with Smith and Fields closing in.
