Randy Weaver Claims Crossville O’Reilly Southern All Stars Win
Crossville, TN – In what many in attendance deemed as the best race they had seen this year, Randy Weaver held off the charges of Ray Cook and Jimmy Owens to claim his first O’Reilly Southern All Star Racing Series win of the 2006 season. Weaver’s win came before a large crowd at his home track, the one third mile Crossville Raceway USA.
Chris Madden bested the thirty-three super late models who signed in for Sunoco Race Fuels Pole Qualifying. Madden’s lap of 12.152 was a full two tenths of a second faster than outside pole sitter Weaver’s best lap. Madden’s Wells Racing Photos Fast Time Award was his fourth of the year and second in as many weeks. Madden and Weaver were followed in qualifying by Ray Cook, Jimmy Owens and Joe Armes. Tim Tungate, Todd Morrow, Scott James, Steve Smith and Mark Vineyard rounded out the top ten qualifiers.
The first of two last chance qualifying races was won by Baxter, TN’s Mark Martin. Martin took the win over Steve Casebolt and Tommy Kerr all of who transferred to the fifty lap feature. The final last chance race proved to be an epic battle for the final transfer position between two Tennessee shoes. John Gill jumped out to an early lead with Joe Armistead in tow. But the battle for third was wild.
Brett Wyatt and Jay Brinkley went door to door in the early going with Brinkley slipping ahead as Anthony White rolled into the hunt. White bypassed Wyatt and looked to make a move on Brinkley. As the laps wound down White pulled even on several occasions but Brinkley held the momentum on the high side. Brinkley was able to hold off White at the line for the final transfer position. White and Wyatt’s evening, however, didn’t end there as the tow Tennesseans took OSAS provisionals to start twenty-third and twenty-fourth.
The first start attempt for the feature ended in a wild melee exiting turn two involving no less than six cars. Only Mike Marlar would be forced to retire from the event. The second start proved to be all for not as well when White went spinning on the front straightaway. The third time was the charm however as the field smashed on the loud pedal. Weaver would rocket to the lead as Madden and Cook went wheel to wheel for second. Back through the field drivers went three and four wide for position on the near perfect Crossville surface.
In the early going Lucas Oil regular Scott James sliced and diced his way into the top five. James’ night ended on early however when he lost his right rear wheel and tire while battling for fourth with Todd Morrow. James was unable to continue. Meanwhile Brandon Kinzer, who restarted from the back of the pack early, charged through the pack and moved into the top ten when the caution flag flew.
As the race progressed through the middle stages polesitter Madden faded back to seventh while Cook and Owens waged an all out war for the runner up spot. Owens ran his CJ Rayburn Race Car around the top as Cook raced through the middle. Several times Owens ran high through the turns and then dove beneath Cook down the straightaway. Owens pulled even on several occasions but finally made the move on the thirt-first circuit. Owens then set his sites on Weaver who had opened up a sizable lead.
When the caution waved for the final time for a stalled Mark Martin, Owens moved right up on Weavers deck. During the final caution Madden pitted for new Hoosier rubber and just barely made it back onto the track to remain on the lead lap. When the field returned to green flag racing Owens threw everything but the kitchen sink at Weaver. Utilizing the same high line momentum strategy Owens threw a Weaver slider through turns one and two. Weaver however used the crossover to regain the point as Owens slipped high with the slide job.
Owens continued his attack as the laps waned. With three to go Owens slid high allowing Cook to regain second. As Weaver flashed beneath the flagstand with the white flag waving Owens’ awesome run would end as he rolled to a stop at the top of turn four. With the white flag out Weaver needed only to bring it back to the line without a problem, which he did to capture his first OSAS win of the season. Cook would come home second with Rickey Armes, Todd Morrow and Justin Ratliff completing the top five.
The O’Reilly Southern All Stars will return to one of it’s home facilities next Saturday night May 20th for the 29th running of the Coca-Cola Tennessee Memorial at the Cleveland Speedway in Cleveland, TN. The fifty lap event will pay $5000 to the winner. For more information call (256) 539-4484 or visit www.southern-allstars.com. You can also visit www.clevelandspeedway.com for event information.
