CLARKSVILLE, TN – Crossville Raceway in Crossville, TN will host round 16 of the 2006 StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series season this Friday night. The main event will be 40-laps and pay $2,500-to-win. The top drivers in the Southeast are expected for the first visit by the StormPay.com DLMS to the 1/3-mile high-banked clay oval.
David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN is the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series point leader with seven wins this season. Gentry leads Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN by 54 points going into the Friday night Crossville Raceway event. Buckingham has three wins this season, and spent the first part of the season as the point leader.
Gentry won the season opener on January 8 at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL, put then went into a victory lane drought, as Buckingham rolled off three wins. At one point in the season, Gentry had dropped to the fourth spot in the points chase. While Buckingham was on his winning roll, he credited Gentry with helping him learn about dirt late model race cars.
Buckingham is in his second year of dirt late model racing after winning several National Championships in Mod Lite race cars. Buckingham turned to the veteran Gentry for help and advice, and learned his lessons well.
The Fourth of July weekend saw Gentry come back to life, even though he suffered what would be a big set back to most teams.
On July 1, Gentry picked up his second win of the season at his home track, Duck River Speedway in Wheel, TN. The next night, however, he destroyed his race car after sailing out of Thunderhill Speedway in Lawrenceburg, TN. Gentry came right back with his backup car over the next two nights, taking the win at StormPay.com Speedway in Clarksville, TN.
Since July 1, Gentry has won six of the last eight races to take over the point lead, and pull out to a 54-point lead over Buckingham. In addition to his seven wins, Gentry has 12 top five finishes and four fast time awards in 15 starts. Buckingham has three wins, with nine top five finishes, 13 top ten finishes, and three fast time honors in 15 starts.
There are still four races left in the 2006 StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series season, and the title chase is long from being over. Behind Tennessee drivers Gentry and Buckingham, there are a host of Georgia drivers looking to make the best of the remaining races, and get into the win column.
